Carteret group (Tulun)
The Carteret group, also known as Tulun, is located
100 kilometres northeast of Buka Township. The group comprises of six
small islands surrounding a lagoon. These islands are only 1–2 meters
above sea level with a total land area of 80 hectares. They have mainly
sandy soils and produce coco nuts and other tree crops. The islands
were once inhabited by Polynesian people but were displaced by the Buka
people some 300 to 400 years ago.
