Green Islands (Nissan)
(Pinipel)
Nissan Island is about 110 kilometres north of Buka
and consists of one smaller island of Pinipel. The land area is around
30 kilometres2; Nissan Island rises to about 25 meters above sea level.
During WWII America had a large base here and developed an important
air strip still in use today.
The people on Nissan are of Melanesian origin and have links with Buka
and New Ireland. Pinipel Island is a raised coral island which is around
10 meters above sea level and a short distance north of Nissan Island.
Air Link flights still go to Nissan on route to Buka via East New Britain.
Nissan Island was of great importance to the American forces during
WWII, it has an airstrip among other relics including a swimming pool
that was built for President Nixon.
Cruise ships often visit Nissan Island for its beauty and excellent
diving. The people of Nissan perform singsing (song and dance)
