Sohano Island (Buka passage)

Sohano Island is located in the Buka passage and a short ride by banana boat from town. Sohano Island was the provincial capital from WWII until 1960. There is a Japanese war memorial on the northern tip commemorating those lost in the battle as well as an old plane wreck on the island and a few in the shallow waters surrounding the island. There are beautiful gardens and it is an excellent place to take a leisurely walk or just sit and watch the waters of Buka Passage and the small water craft moving about. At the northern tip there is the Tchibo rock which features in local legend and is said to have magical powers.
